The Book of Magauran
Leabhar Méig Shamhradháin
Edited by Lambert McKenna, S.J.
ISBN 1855000164
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies 1947

The vellum, commonly known as the Magauran MS., is the property of O’Connor Don and is preserved at Clonalis, Co. Roscommon. It is one of the few MSS. collected by Charles O’Connor of Belanagare, which were not transferred by his grandson Red. Charles O’Connor to the library of the Duke of Buckingham. In 1939 O’Connor Don kindly permitted a Photostat copy of the MS. to be made by the Royal Irish Academy and deposited in the library of that institution. An exact facsimile was made by Joseph O’Longan in 1870, and is now in the library of University College Dublin. On the left-hand pages is an exact copy of the MS. It follows the MS., even in its mistakes, such as for instance, obviously unmetrical or ungrammatical spellings, ditto graphs etc. On the right-hand pages is the standardised text.
The present volume, the 6th, concludes the diplomatic edition of the Book of Leinster undertaken by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. The first volume appeared in 1954 and was succeeded by Vols. II-V between 1956 and 1967. Regrettably the earlier editors did not live to complete their work.
