Níl aon amhras ach go bhfuil Pádraic Mac Piarais ar dhuine de mhórphearsana stair na hÉireann. Ach cérbh é? Mar is iomaí léargas ar an bPiarsach atá curtha os ár gcomhair sna céad bliain ó bhásaigh sé.

Tá an t-iriseoir agus an t-eagarthóir nuachtáin ann; tá an t-idéalaí agus an Conraitheoir dílis; an t-oideachasóir agus an máistir scoile; an gearrscéalaí, an file agus an drámadóir; an t-agóidí, an tÓglach, an réabhlóidí, an ceannaire míleata agus Uachtarán Rialtas Sealadach Phoblacht na hÉireann. Agus, ar deireadh, tá an laoch, an naomh, an mairtíreach glórmhar. Agus ar an láimh eile, tá an fear a bhí róthugtha don rómánsachas i ngach gné den saol, fear a shamhlaigh é féin mar shlánaitheoir na nGael, a bhí an-tógtha leis an bhféiníobairt agus le doirteadh fola.

Mar chuid den chomóradh céad bliain ar Éirí Amach na Cásca, is mithid súil a chaitheamh an athuair ar an bhfear casta ilghnéitheach seo. Sa leabhar seo, bunaithe ar léachtaí a craoladh ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, tugann dháréag scoláirí aghaidh ar ghnéithe éagsúla de shaol, de shaothar agus de smaointeoireacht Phádraic Mhic Phiarais, ag súil le solas nua a chaitheamh ar an bpearsa seo a mairimid fós faoina scáth.

Na hÚdair: Róisín Ní Ghairbhí, Regina Uí Chollatáin, Alan Titley, Gearóid Denvir, Ciarán Ó Coigligh, Fionntán de Brún, Caitríona Ó Torna, Seosamh Ó Cuaig, Úna Ní Bhroiméil, Mary N. Harris, J.J. Lee, Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh.

A collection of essays (in Irish) on the many aspects to the live and work of Pádraic Mac Piarais (Patrick Pearse). There can be no question but that Patrick Pearse is one of the major figures in Irish history. But who was he? Because we have been presented with many different views of Pearse in the 100 years since his execution as a result of his involvement in the Easter Rising 1916.

There is the journalist and the newspaper editor, the idealist, the educationalist and teacher, the short story writer, the poet and the dramatist, the protester, the Irish Volunteer, the revolutionary, the military leader and the President of the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic. And, at last, there is the hero, the saint and the glorious martyr. On the other hand there is the man who was too given to romanticism in every aspect of life, a man who imagined himself as the saviour of the Gaels and who showed an abiding interest in the idea of martyrdom and blood sacrifice.

To mark the 100-year commemoration of the Easter Rising, it is time to look again at this complicated and multi-faceted man. In this book, based on talks which were broadcast on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta in 2016, twelve scholars discuss various aspects of the life and work of Patrick Pearse, with the hope of shedding new light on this figure whose influence still lives on today.
