In 1935, shortly after the establishment of the Irish Folklore Commission, the folklore collector Liam Mac Meanman was sent to Cruacha Gorma, a remote part of Donegal, in an effort to collect and preserve as much folklore as possible from this truly Irish area. Ten years later another skilled collector was sent. Seán Ó hEochaidh, to Cruacha to add to the collection of folklore that had been gathered in the area until then. Among the antiques the two collectors worked with was Anna John Choit Nic An Luain.

As part of this publication there are 21 songs recorded by six of the best old-fashioned singers from County Donegal. Mairéad ní Mhaonaigh, Anna Ní Mhaonaigh and Máire Ní Choilm, Dominic Mac Giolla Bhríde, Brian ó Domhnaill and Lillis Ó Laoire have chosen songs from the collection and composed music from their own experiences. Some songs can be read and heard at the same time.
