Céard a thárla nuair a tugadh leabhar le hEarnán de Blaghd mar bhronntanas do Mháirtín Ó Cadhain? Nuair a chuaigh Breandán Ó Beacháin go hÁrainn chun a chuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú? Nuair a tairgeadh beathaisnéis Sheáin Sabhat do roghnóirí an Chlub Leabhar?

Nuair a bhunaigh Seán agus Bríghid Ó hÉigeartaigh a gcomhlacht foilsithe, Sáirséal agus Dill, bhí fúthu ardchaighdeán a bhaint amach idir ábhar agus dearadh na leabhar, iad a dhíol go héifeachtach, agus gan aon chinsireacht a chleachtadh. Laistigh de bheagán blianta bhí liosta údar acu ba dheacair a shárú: Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Máirtí Ó Direáin, Máire Mhac an tSaoi, Liam Ó Flaithearta agus mórán eile.

Ní gan dua agus costas a cuireadh sin i gcrích. Ba ghearr gur ídíodh bunchaipitil an chomhlachta, agus ba mhinic i mbaol a theipthe é – go háirithe nuair a cailleadh Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh go tobann, in aois a chaoga bliain, agus é ag obair ar phrofaí go déanach san oíche.

Caitheann an leabhar seo géarsholas ar scríbhneoirí agus ar litríocht na Gaeilge, ar chúrsaí tráchtála agus tionsclaíochta, ar ghnéithe den stáseirbhís, ar pholaitíocht na Gaeilge, agus ar pholaitíocht na hÉireann.

The history of one of Ireland’s foremost publishing houses in the Irish language as told by the family of the founders.

When Seán and Bríghid Ó hÉigeartaigh founded their publishing house their goal was to publish the best of Irish writing, to achieve excellence in layout, design and print quality, to distribute and sell the books effectively and to allow freedom of expression by not practising censorship. No small task.

Within a few short years they were working with the best and most well-known of Ireland’s writers in the Irish language of the 20th century: Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Máirtín Ó Direáin, Máire Mhac an tSaoi, Liam Ó Flaithearta and many more.

It may seem like an overnight success but it didn’t come easy. It wasn’t long before the company’s founding capital was gone and the publishing house was often on the verge of closure. No more so than when the co-founder Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh died suddenly at the age of fifty years old while proofing manuscripts into the small hours of the morning.

This book gives a fascinating look into the lives of the writers who worked with Sáirséal agus Dill and their work. It is more than that, it also takes the reader on a journey into the history of publishing, commerce, industry and the political life of Ireland.
