Nuair a chríochnaíonn an troid san Eoraip i mí Bealtaine 1945, níl deireadh leis an fhulaingt ná baol air. Tá leathmhilliún Gearmánach le bás a fháil fós, agus dhá mhilliún déag le díbirt as a n-áiteanna dúchais. Tá máistrí úra ar an mhór-roinn, agus a cinniúint á socrú eatarthu. Le saol iomlán nua atá na daoine ag streachailt, agus achan riail as feidhm.
Níl i ndán do mhná na tíre – nó is iad atá fágtha – ach orcras agus éigniú, anró agus náire. An rud is measa faoin scéal, b’fhéidir, nach bhfuil trua dá laghad ag an chuid eile den domhan dóibh i ndiaidh choireanna na Naitsithe. Agus sa mhullach air sin uile, tá orthu tabhairt faoi thasc ollmhór: a dtír a atógáil as smionagar an chogaidh – lena lámha féin.
Díríonn na scéalta cumhachtacha seo ar chruachás na ndaoine atá fágtha ar a gconlán féin, le linn na cogaíochta agus ina diaidh.

When the fighting in Europe ends in May 1945, neither the suffering nor the danger ends. Half a million Germans are yet to die, and twelve million are to be expelled from their native places. There are new masters of the continent, and its fate is decided between them. The people are struggling with a completely new life, and only one rule is out of order.
The fate of the women of the country – or what is left – is nothing but horror and rape, anguish and shame. The worst thing about the situation, perhaps, is that the rest of the world does not have the least pity for them after the crimes of the Nazis. And on top of all that, they have to undertake a huge task: to rebuild their country from the debris of war – with their own hands.
These powerful stories focus on the plight of those left to fend for themselves, during and after the war.
