Preface

This commentary on the Irish Adam and Eve narrative in Saltair na Rann has several aims. Its primary purpose is to clarify and to provide a background of individual passages and motifs in the work, indicating where possible the specific source.
Secondly, the commentary aims to present the Irish narrative as part of a broad tradition of adaptations of the first books of Genesis.
Thirdly, it is hoped that this commentary will contribute towards the understanding of Saltair na Rann as a literary work of some value. Finally, a detailed study of the sources of the Adam and Eve narrative can provide material for the study of the knowledge and use of Old Testament apocrypha in medieval Ireland.
