Is éard ata sa leabhar seo cnuasach filíochta a chum Séamas (‘ An Setter’) Ó Caoindealbháin go príomha – duine d’fhilí bisiúla Co. Luimnigh i dtosach an naoú haois déag – agus roinnt dánta le filí eile a mhiar an trath céanna leis. Bhí an eigse beo beathúch sa tsochaí lena linn agus spreag na filí a chéile chun ceapadóireachta. Bhí éileamh fós ar thuirimh agus ar dhéantúis eile i nGaeilge i measc an phobail an tráth úd. Cé gur leanadh de mhúnlaí fileata seanbhunaithe an ochtú haois déag, níor leasc leis na filí a bhfuil a saothar curtha os á gcomhair dul i ngleic le téamaí comhaimseartha an fhaicseanaíocht agus bhíoblóireacht cuir i gcás. Mhair cuid d’fhilíocht Uí Chaoindealbháin agus rannscéalta Gaeilge faoi ina cheantar dúchais go ceann i bhfad ina dhiaidh. Cloch ina charn agus i gcarn na nGaeilgeoirí nár lig a chuimhne i ndearmad is ea an saothar seo.

This book is a collection of poetry composed mainly by Séamas (‘The Setter’) Ó Caoindealbháin – one of the prolific poets of Co. Limerick in the early nineteenth century – and some poems by other poets who sang at the same time. Poetry was alive and well in society during which time the poets encouraged each other to compose. There was still a demand for comments and other works in Irish in the community at that time. While long – established poetic models of the eighteenth century continued, the poets whose work is presented did not hesitate to engage with contemporary themes of fiction and biblicalism, for example. Some of Ó Chaoindealbháin’s poetry and Irish language stories about him survived in his native area for a long time to come. This work is a stone in the heap and heap of Irish speakers who never forgot his memory.
