Lorgaireacht an tSoidhigh Naomhtha
An early Modern Irish Translation of the
Quest of the Holy Grail
Edited with English Translation By Sheila Falconer
ISBN 185500030X
Institiúid Ard-Léinn 1953

The publication of the Irish translation of the Quest of the Holy Grail makes generally accessible what is believed to be the last remaining un-edited Arthurian text in Irish. This text is of considerable interest, not simply as evidence that the Quest was in all probability known in Ireland by the middle of the 15th Century, but from the fact that it is a unique version and one which appears to bring us nearer to the archetype of Quest MSS, than any other extant copy and to have come through a lost English translation.
Because of its uniqueness, the comparison between the Irish and the Old French Queste has been done in some detail in the Commentary, incidentally facilitating further possible study of its relationship to other versions. For the same reason this edition includes an English translation. This follows the Irish as closely as consistent with readability in English, otherwise it would be of little practical use either to Arthurian scholars or to students of Irish.
