When Conn R. Ó Cléirigh died in April 1995, having served for many years as Professor of Linguistics at University College Dublin, and Chairman of the Linguistics Institute of Ireland, his friends Anders Ahlqvist and Vêra Čapková decided to publish a collection of essays in his memory.

The volume the editors have put together is a fine memorial to a remarkable person. Conn Ó Cléirigh was an incomparable teacher, and a loyal friend of linguists and Irish scholars around the world. His influence was enormous, and the editors have captured the full scope and depth of his life’s work in the 46  essays that are published here for the first time, written in memory of Conn by colleagues of his and former students, some of whom are now among the world’s leading scholars
