An tAncaire
Fiche Amhrán 1980-1990
John Beag Ó Flatharta

Folksongs, Country & Western, Ballads and Traditional songs in Irish and English
Rugadh John Beag ÓFlatharta i bhFoirnis, Leitir Mealláin, i gCeantar na nOileán. Bhí spéis ariamh aige sa cheol agus sna hamhráin, agus go háirithe sa sean-nós. Cé gur amhránaí cumasach sean-nóis é, áfach, ní mar gheall ar an sean-nós is mó atá aithne air. Tá an Flathartach tar éis a lorg sainiúil féin a fhágáil ar amhráin agus ar chultúr ceoil Chonamara, agus tá sé tar éis doras nua a oscailt a bheadh faoi ghlas fós, seans, murach é. Mar gheall ar theacht John Beag & Na hAncairí tá meán nua amhránaíochta againn i gConamara le breis agus deich mbliana anuas, meán atá ag fréamhú níos doimhne chuile lá, agus ar dlúthchuid de phobal Chonamara anois é. Ba dheacair méar a leagan go díreach ar an stíl amhránaíochta atá aige. Go deimhin, mar atá soiléir ón taifeadadh seo, is meascán de stíleanna éagsúla atá i gceist, agus déanann John Beag a chuid féin díobh ar fad.

John Beag Ó Flatharta, “An tAncaire,” comes from Foirnis, Leitir Mealláin, on Connemara's island coast. He has recorded four impressive albums with Connemara group Na hAncairí and three solo albums to date. Immersed in local traditional song initially, sean-nós (unaccompanied), he has combined that poignant and noble tradition with that of the English ballad in Ireland and American Country & Western to create a fresh, unique and beautiful genre of singing which can only be called ŒJohn Beag's¹. In his native Connemara, composition is common and thriving thanks to his singing and airplay on the Irish language national radio service, Raidió na Gaeltachta. It needs to be documented also that many groups and individuals followed and are following the example of John Beag and Na hAncairí: Duirling, Fóidín Meara, Iorras Aithneach, Cillín and Beairtle Ó Domhnaill, to name but a few.
