An attempt has been made in this commentary to mediate between the reader and the text. It was not obvious at the beginning to perceive the background and context, both national and ecclesiastical: to refine and explain the implications, both educational and religious, of the cultural revolution of the sixties and the impact of the aggiornamento of the Second Vatican Council, on the life and work of the Standard. Since the melting of the foam of the river on the structures, leadership, manners and practices of the institution of the Church and such a great transformation of Ireland that was there, it could not be taken for granted that the reasons for the culture and the beliefs that shaped our generation known to many of today’s readers who are under half a century old.
