Irish Dialects Past and Present
With chapters on Scottish and Manx.
Thomas F. O’Rahilly
ISBN 0901282553
Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies 1988
First published 1932

T.F. O’Rahilly’s Irish Dialects Past and Present, first published in 1932, was a pioneer work in a field, which until then had attracted comparatively few scholars. Interest in dialects has increased since then and there have been many individual studies of dialects of Irish, Scottish and Manx, as well as linguistic surveys of Gaelic-Speaking areas. Nevertheless O’Rahilly’s work, which he himself described as little more than a summary of a number of detailed studies which he had prepared in the 16 years preceding its publication, remains the only attempt at a general study of major features in the Gaelic dialects against the background of earlier forms of the language.

Out of print for several years this is mainly a photolithographic reprint of the first edition, no changes have been made in the body of the work, apart from the correction of some misprints and the incorporation in the text of a few emendations, which O’Rahilly had added at the end of the book.
